Ecuadorian Essence makes ECP Energy with Nacional cacao from Ecuador’s Pacific coast and guayusa from the Ecuadorian Amazon, uniting two regions of the country in one bar.
The cacao is Nacional, the “Arriba” variety from Manabí, grown on the equator with close to twelve hours of daylight all year. Ecuador is the world’s largest producer of fine flavor cacao, a category that represents only about 5% of global production according to the International Cocoa Organization.
Guayusa is a native plant of the Ecuadorian rainforest, traditionally brewed at dawn by Amazonian Kichwa communities. ECP Energy is made in Ecuador and brought to the Washington DC area by Ecuadorian Essence, a family from Ecuador. It is not sold in national chains.

What Is Guayusa?

Guayusa (Ilex guayusa) is a leaf from the Ecuadorian Amazon that contains naturally occurring caffeine, and ECP Energy uses it to give the chocolate a natural lift.
Guayusa is a relative of the holly used to make yerba mate. Like tea and coffee, it contains caffeine, along with theobromine — the same compound found in cacao. Its taste is mild and earthy, which makes it a natural partner for chocolate.

ECP Energy is made with organic milk to soften the cacao and create a creamy chocolate. The bar is USDA-certified organic. Because it contains milk, it is not vegan.

When to Enjoy ECP Energy

Ecuadorian Essence recommends ECP Energy in the morning, mid-afternoon or before a workout, because its caffeine from guayusa and cacao is best enjoyed during the day.
For the evening, choose ECP Calm instead, which is made without guayusa or coffee. ECP Energy is a food, not a supplement or energy drink.

Guayusa vs. Coffee

Ecuadorian Essence offers ECP Energy as a different way to enjoy natural caffeine: instead of a single strong cup, the caffeine from guayusa and cacao comes in a food, with oats and milk, square by square.
You don’t have to give up your morning coffee. ECP Energy can take the place of an extra cup later in the day. Store in a dry place at 16–18°C (below 75°F) to avoid melting.
