Description
Where ECP Calm Comes From
Ecuadorian Essence makes ECP Calm with Nacional cacao from Manabí, Ecuador, and four herbs used in infusions, bringing an evening ritual into a chocolate bar.
In Ecuador, herbal infusions of chamomile, linden or lemon verbena are part of daily life. The base of ECP Calm is Nacional cacao, the “Arriba” variety from the Pacific coast, grown on the equator with close to twelve hours of daylight all year. Ecuador is the world’s largest producer of fine flavor cacao, a category that represents only about 5% of global production according to the International Cocoa Organization.
ECP Calm is made in Ecuador and brought to the Washington DC area by Ecuadorian Essence, a family from Ecuador. It is not sold in national chains.
A Grand Gold Medal Chocolate
ECP Calm received the Grand Gold Medal at the Ecuador Chocolate Awards 2024, the highest distinction of the competition, making it the most awarded bar in the Ecuadorian Essence collection.
The Ecuador Chocolate Awards evaluate chocolate made with Ecuadorian cacao, and the Grand Gold Medal confirms that the herbs are added to a chocolate of the highest quality.
The Herbs Behind ECP Calm
Ecuadorian Essence combines four herbs in ECP Calm — valerian, chamomile, linden and lemon verbena — giving the bar a gentle, aromatic herbal profile.
Valerian
Valerian root has been used for centuries in evening teas in Europe and the Americas. In ECP Calm it adds an earthy, herbal depth that pairs naturally with dark cacao.
Chamomile
Chamomile is one of the most familiar evening infusions in the world. Its soft aroma rounds out the bitterness of the cacao.
Linden & Lemon Verbena
Linden flowers bring a delicate floral note, and lemon verbena — known in Ecuador as “cedrón” — adds a bright, citrusy freshness.
When to Enjoy ECP Calm
Ecuadorian Essence created ECP Calm for evening moments, after work or after dinner, so one or two squares become a signal to slow down.
ECP Calm is made without guayusa or coffee. Like every dark chocolate, its cacao naturally contains small amounts of caffeine and theobromine, so if you are sensitive to caffeine, enjoy it earlier in the evening. ECP Calm is a food, not a sleep aid or medication.
Pairings for an Evening Ritual
Ecuadorian Essence suggests pairing ECP Calm with chamomile or linden tea, echoing the herbs inside the bar, so the flavors reinforce each other.
It also pairs well with warm milk or a glass of red wine after dinner. Let one square melt slowly and notice how the herbal notes appear after the cacao. Store in a dry place at 16–18°C (below 75°F) to avoid melting.
